Plant Rescue

The Imago Earth Center, a non-profit and non-political organization, conducts native plant rescues with Cincinnati landowners and developers in an effort to save native plants that would otherwise be lost to construction and development. Plant rescue digs are supervised by Imago Earth Center naturalists and carried out only when granted permission by the landowner. This is done at the developer's convenience, following a set of policies and procedures established by the Earth Center. It is not the mission of the Imago Earth Center to interfere, impede, disturb or delay any development on the sites in which we perform plant rescues.

Rescued plants are trans-planted at the Earth Center, which helps preserve the diversity of native plants in the Cincinnati area. A plant rescue is a great way for landowners to give an expense-free donation to the Earth Center, and a chance for developers to gain public recognition by dampening the effects development has on the environment. However, it must be made clear that plant rescues are not a device to persuade the further development of wild land, but a means of saving native plants slated for immediate and certain destruction.

How to Get Involved
Notifying the Earth Center of Potential Dig Sites
Land is always being developed, so if you learn of where this is happening at the present or in the future, let us know! We can then contact the landowner and discuss their interest in participating in a plant rescue.

Volunteering as a Plant Rescuer
Sign up to join our crew of plant rescuers! The Earth Center will contact you two weeks before a dig will take place to notify you of the date and time of the dig. Plant rescue volunteers are encouraged to go over the code ethics the Earth Center expects the rescue crew to abide by, and are required to sign a participant agreement form as well as a release waiver, which holds both the landowner and the Imago Earth Center harmless for any and all liabilities associated with a rescue. An Imago Earth Center naturalist will have these forms present on the dig day.

I will keep informed on all laws, regulations or rules governing collecting on public lands and will observe them.

I will, to the best of my ability, ascertain boundary lines of property on which I plan to collect.

I will cause no willful damage to property of any kind - fences, signs, buildings, etc.

I will leave all gates as found.

I will discard no burning material (matches, cigarettes, etc.)

I will fill all excavation holes which may be dangerous to livestock or people.

I will cause no willful damage to collecting material and will take home only what I can reasonably use.

I will leave all collecting areas devoid of litter, regardless of how found.

I will cooperate with field trip leaders and those in designated authority in all collecting areas.

I will report to an Imago Earth Center Naturalist any plants on public lands, which should be protected for the enjoyment of future generations for public educational and scientific purposes.

I will observe the Golden Rule, will use good outdoor manners, and will at all times conduct myself in a manner which will add to the stature and public image of the Imago Earth Center.
